KPTV 3D Movie Intro And Bumpers — June 12, 1982

In the early 80s, the western Comin’ At Ya introduced a revival of the 1950s anaglyph 3D movie trend…in some cases literally. The old 3D movies were repackaged and sold in syndication for local stations to create their own event nights. Both KOIN and KPTV leapt at the chance, the former picking up 1954’s Gorilla At Large and the latter buying the rights to show 1955’s Revenge Of The Creature.

KOIN picked a late June airdate for Gorilla At Large, driving KPTV to one-up them by moving the airdate for Revenge Of The Creature ahead of KOIN’s. Then they donated all proceeds from the sale of 3D glasses (available at any Plaid Pantry!) to Easter Seals. KOIN had no charity in mind, making them look not only late but heartless. Check and Mate.

KOIN had no choice but to sadly walk away, delaying Gorilla At Large to the following September. KPTV proudly debuted “The Northwest’s First 3D TV Movie” on the night of June 12, with this goofy-ass introduction. I cannot confirm that KPTV produced it, but it seems likely — I have another taping of this movie from a different region of the country and it has a different intro.
