Oh Boyds, Oh Boyds, Oh Boyds — 1991

With their next ad, Boyds decided to parody another recent media hit — When Harry Met Sally. Specifically the most famous scene in the movie, which if you know anything about it, you’d think it would be difficult to depict in a daytime coffee ad from 1991.

Is she “faking” her love of Boyds? That can’t be the message. So we have to assume one sip of this stuff has literally sent her into a primal ecstasy so intense she can only scream the brand’s name. My mother hated this ad, and would make a face whenever it would appear on TV. However, she was in the minority.

Regardless of where it came from, “Oh Boyds Oh Boyds Oh Boyds” became a meme around here. In fact I believe Boyds still uses this as their slogan to this very day. The ad was so successful that just continuing with the parodies made no sense anymore. But how do you make a sequel to a specific ad meant to mimic a specific scene, which you didn’t own to begin with?

I was in a room with several other people when this variant first aired in late 1991 and the entire room BURST OUT LAUGHING. I don’t know if that’s the reaction Boyds wanted, but it’s the one they got.
